REPORT ON DCE’S ENGAGEMENT WITH FISHERFOLK ON THE ILLEGAL USE OF LIGHT FOR FISHING AT APAM AND MUMFORD HELD ON 28 JULY 2025 AT THEIR RESPECTIVE LANDING BEACH SITE.

Following a directive from the Hon.Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development regarding the illegal use of lights for fishing, the District Chief Executive (DCE) held an emergency meeting with the fisherfolk at Apam and Mumford to discuss the issue and promote compliance with national fisheries regulations.

The meeting was convened to caution the fishing community about the consequences of using light and chemicals for fishing and to reaffirm the government’s position on enforcing the law to protect marine resources.

The DCE informed the fisherfolk that the Minister had clearly stated that anyone caught using light for fishing would be arrested and dealt with under the law. The DCE described the matter as a critical issue that needs immediate attention.

The DCE further appealed to the fishing community to protect the good name of Apam and Mumford, which are known for being disciplined and law-abiding. He said, “I plead with you to do the right things so we can maintain our good reputation.”

The fisherfolk thanked the DCE for engaging them. It acknowledged that, although leaders do not always accompany the crews at sea, they have heard reports of some individuals using lights illegally. They revealed that they had already made public announcements warning all fishermen to desist from such practices.

They assured the DCE that they accept the directives and will monitor their members and ensure compliance.

Also, no one will be allowed to use light or chemicals for fishing in the sea, and they will continue to support efforts to stop illegal fishing activities in Apam.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both the Assembly and the fisherfolk committing to collaborating in protecting marine resources and upholding Apam’s respected image. The DCE thanked the leadership for their cooperation and urged them to remain vigilant in the interest of sustainability and community development.
