DISTRIBUTION OF SANITARY PADS TO BASIC SCHOOLS IN GOMOA WEST DISTRICT ASSEMBLY BY THE DCE AND THE DISTRICT EDUCATION DIRECTOR ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH,2025, AT THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLY PREMISES.

On Friday, 19th September 2025, nine basic schools in the Gomoa West District Assembly received a total of 20,186 sanitary pads as part of the government’s initiative to support the education of the girl-child. The pads were distributed specifically to pupils in Primary three through to pupils in JHS Three across all beneficiary schools.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Mohammed Kassim, presented the items on behalf of the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama. He explained that providing sanitary pads to children, particularly in Ghana, has been a focus of various initiatives aimed at keeping girls in school and promoting menstrual hygiene management. The gesture formed part of the President’s campaign promise to provide sanitary pads to schoolgirls. He further explained that the Government of Ghana allocated GH¢292.4 million in the 2025 budget to provide free sanitary pads to female students in basic and secondary schools. This initiative seeks to address period poverty, reduce absenteeism, and promote menstrual health and hygiene among adolescent girls.

Hon. Kassim further noted that teenage pregnancies often occur when some men take advantage of young girls by offering to buy them sanitary pads. He stressed that the President values the well-being of girls, hence the commitment to supply the pads. He also encouraged pupils to urge their parents to provide them with sanitary pads regularly, ensuring they stay in school without interruptions.

The District Director of Education, Mr. Kwame Yeboah, expressed gratitude to the DCE and the President for the intervention. He reiterated that this gesture by the President will boost girls’ confidence, enabling them to participate fully in school activities without worrying during their menstrual periods. Mr. Yeboah also advised the pupils to inform their parents to continue supporting them by providing them with sanitary pads when the government’s supply is exhausted. The programme was well received by teachers and staff of the Assembly.
